Bamboo rainstick or "Pa-Ulan":
The pa-ulan (literally “asking for rain”) varies in length from about 40cm to a meter and a half.
It is filled with mung beans, rice grains or small stones.
By turning the instrument over and over again, the beans slowly fall from one side to the other.
The fall of the stones is slowed by small bamboo pins driven through the bamboo stick. This creates the typical sound of the rainstick.
This richly decorated instrument is used during rituals designed to induce rain.
